Space Shuttle

The Space Shuttle was a spacecraft that took multiple trips into space.  It carried astronauts back and forth to the International Space Station.  A large rocket launched the Space Shuttle into orbit, and it returned to Earth by flying like an airplane.

EXPLORING SPACE

After successful travel to the moon, scientists have wondered how far in our universe humans could travel.  The Space Shuttle and International Space Station were developed as stepping stones to exploration that is limited only by our imagination.
International Space Station

The Moon is Earth's natural satellite, and the International Space Station (ISS) is a manmade satellite where astronauts can live and work for long periods of time.

Hubble Space Telescope

The Hubble Space Telescope orbits Earth and gives astronomers a view of the universe that could never be seen from any telescope on Earth.

Mission to Mars

Travel to the Red Planet is not a new idea.  In 1976 twin Viking spacecraft landed on Mars to search for forms of life.  Today NASA is making plans to send a person to Mars.

Your Mission

Ever since NASA was organized, people have debated whether or not the United States should spend money on the space program. Now NASA is planning a journey to Mars.  How have we benefitted from space exploration so far?  Do you think space travel is worth the money?  Compare and contrast travel to the Moon and travel to Mars to determine if the cost is worth the benefits.  Use this online Venn Diagram to organize your thoughts.
